THE DOMESDAY BOOK OF DOGS

Tahltan Bear Dog.

This North American 'breed' was used by the Tahltan Indians for hunting bear.  Particularly in the spring when black bears fresh from hibernation were hampered by deep snow, where the dogs could move about adroitly on the crust.  The idea was for the dog(s) to harass the bear until it could be despatched  by the approaching hunters.

Weight: 10 to 15 lbs, small, predominantly black dogs considered typical.
